Have You Confused Prospecting With Marketing?

Every day, hard working network marketers are putting up fliers, sending emails, and using various Internet marketing methods but still haven’t had a single soul sign up.

Sad, but true, folks tend to confuse all the activities associated with MARKETING with prospecting.

And while it’s true that we must get our message out there and be seen, we need to remember that marketing is simply preparing the person to buy…or in this case, join.

Ask the top recruiters from pretty much any network marketing company, and they’ll tell you that TALKING to people is critical to effective prospecting.

Articles and trainings by the thousands have suggested that we meet them where they are with a solution to their problem, and there is no better way to find out what their problem is than by simply talking with them.

Prospecting = Conversation

Whether face to face or on the phone, it’s only by having a REAL conversation with someone that we can get to know them, their needs and their pain.

It’s during those initial conversations that we get a “feel” for the other person…and they for us. We discover if there’s a connection and whether or not we feel comfortable with each other.

(We won’t always, you know)

So continue with your fliers, pull tabs, emails, articles, blog posts and videos. Use as many marketing methods as you know to get yourself and your opportunity in front of as many people as you possibly can.

But remember, marketing is only PART of your business, and although it can keep you really busy…it’s NOT the same as prospecting.

When they respond, THEN you have someone you can prospect.

And when you TALK with your prospects, your team will grow.

So there I am, playing on the status of my great big little friend Tar’Lese Rideaux. She talked about not caring about what people think of her promoting her primary income stream so aggressively. She made a point, which I completely agree with…

Most people who criticize others who are doing something entrepreneurial hate their day jobs. But when given an opportunity to look at something else, they won’t move. Or they’ll keep criticizing. But in the next second they’re spewing negativity about the way their life is now…

We know how that goes. Anyone who steps out of their comfort zone and away from what the rest of the tribe is doing is going to get pooped on. It’s a guarantee.

Not everyone will do it. Just enough people to get your attention.

.
TRUTH # 1: Most people won’t care what you’re doing. They’re too busy keeping their own heads above water.

.
As this particular thread kept going, it started filling up with comments about how mean people are and how working a traditional job was a trap for the middle class. The usual stuff people say to entice others to join their home biz.

.
It started getting a little weird, at least to me. It looked like a few folks were trying to diss the whole idea of working for a living. Time for money. Work for paycheck.

.
Well, ‘scuse me one second, but that’s what most of the world is doing.

.
And that’s what the people who make, market, distribute and service the products of the companies who make these people money are doing.

.
And that’s what the people in customer service are doing…the same ones people call when they have a problem.

.
TRUTH # 2: Most people don’t have the combination of skill, ambition and consciousness it takes to live an entrepreneurial life.

.
We cast a wide net in home business recruiting because lots of people are looking for different things, and are coming in with different levels of readiness to get them.

.
There’s the serial entrepreneur or salesperson who’s always looking for the next hot deal.

.
There’s the housewife who wants to do something to make herself feel more alive and effective, and maybe bring in a little money on the side.

.
There’s the dad who needs an extra thousand dollars or so a month to make a mortgage payment or afford college tuition.

.
And there are a whole lot of people who come in for the money…and stay for the sense of excitement, belonging and personal development.

.
Like I said, we cast a wide net.

.
Because we’re on the lookout for lots of different types of people.

.
And most of them aren’t ready to do the kinds of things that succeed…to BE THE KIND OF PERSON who succeeds in home business.

.
(That’s why people like me are around…to help develop the consciousness of attraction and abundance.)

.
Putting people down who haven’t reached that place yet is a stupid move.

.
Because that’s the target audience you’re trying to sponsor into your organization.

.
And no one’s gonna go where they’re made to feel inadequate.

.
And anyone who spends time disrespecting people with jobs and steady paychecks and “normal lives” will have to face an uncomfortable reality…

.
TRUTH # 3: Anyone who spends time trying to convince anyone of anything is usually trying to convince themselves at the same time.

.
If you’re arguing with someone about the need for a paycheck, or the wisdom of the “40-40-40 plan” or the beauty of being a serial risk taker, you haven’t bought into the program yourself.

.
You’re scared of your choice, and you’re projecting it onto others.

.
Besides, like I said, putting anyone else’s choice down is unattractive.

.
Being confident and comfortable with what you’re doing is the best way to invite others into your world…in a way that will make them want to come along.

Don’t worry if you don’t.

You can grow into it.

Stop trying to convince yourself you’ve got it.

Sometimes finding success in Network Marketing feels like an impossibility, especially if you’ve been struggling for years.

I KNOW, we were right there with you.

But in the past couple of months things have changed SUBSTANTIALLY…

This weekend we experienced a level of success that we’d never known before ,

and I want to share the reasons why.

It’s not like the successes we’ve had recently will allow us to leave our jobs…

sure we made a little money, but it was what these successes represented that was so HUGE for us.

They represented PROGRESS and movement FORWARD…. that we are on the right track.

Today, I want to show you what made the difference for us.

Even Leaders Don’t Find Success in Network Marketing Right Away

If you listen to the stories of the many leaders in the Network Marketing industry, you’ll hear a common theme –

They usually start out with “I struggled for years…”

It’s true for Rosemary and me as well.

We were in 3 different MLMs in 3 years before we finally started to have some success in Network Marketing.

Why were we jumping from opportunity to opportunity?

Because we were searching.

As it turns out, we were searching for the WRONG thing.

We were looking for the perfect COMPANY with the perfect COMP PLAN that would help us succeed.

What Should You be Looking For?

At this point in the post, you’re probably expecting to hear the same old thing…

“Don’t look outwards for solutions, look INWARDS.”

In other words, look to improve YOURSELF and YOUR SKILLS in order to find success in Network Marketing.

It’s true… partly.

It’s definitely true that you need to become a bit “seasoned” before success will find you… by way of learning some basic skills, strategies and perhaps dealing with some “mindset issues.”

But there’s more to it than that.

How we Finally Found Success in Network Marketing

Sure, we switched to a new company and really resonated with their message and their product.

But so do many people who NEVER realize success in Network Marketing.

So what’s been the difference for us in the last 7 months?

1. We found a mentor/coach who would tell us the TRUTH

We’ve had several mentors during our journey and most have been great.

They’ve helped us through different struggles we had along the way.

But here’s the problem with most coaches and mentors:

THEY SUGARCOAT EVERYTHING.

They tell you how great you’re doing even when you’re not doing squat.

They tell you SUCCESS can happen at any time.

Well, that’s all well and good but the fact is…

You need to hear the truth.

You need to know that what you’re doing for your business each and every day isn’t worth a dime if you’re not presenting your business to people.
You need to know that meeting people isn’t enough… you need to have a conversation about your business.

 

You need to hear that your Warm Market is not your enemy if you’re looking for signups fast (more on this in a minute).

You need someone to KICK YOUR BUTT when you’re not doing what you should be doing.

You don’t need a friend or cheerleader, you need someone who already has success to be very blunt about what you need to do to be successful.

It’s that simple.

Yet many get turned off by this kind of mentor. Many want to be propped up and told everything will be okay.

The reality is… it WON’T be okay if you don’t start doing the right things.

We found a coach and mentor who wasn’t afraid to kick us in the butt.

It’s been a huge difference maker.

Now, that’s what we do for OUR TEAM MEMBERS…. we bluntly tell them the truth and kick them in the butt when needed.

So far no one has complained! :-)

2. Joining a Team that Supports Each Other

Never before have we found a team that supports each other the way our current team does.

We leverage Private Facebook Groups and Trainings to ask questions, run strategies, share experiences and get support.

Since we are an international company there is literally help available 24/7.

That’s important because you can’t expect your sponsor to always be there when you need them.

In our group, everyone is pulling for the same thing… success of our team.

It’s a great thing to be part of.

3. We embraced our Warm Market

What?

You can’t get all the signups you want from faceless people on the Internet?

Not if you want to make some quick advances in your company.

In our company, new distributors who bring in 2 new people in their first 30 days gets a huge bonus that pays them greatly for the rest of their career.

And the best way to bring in those people in 30 days is to talk to people you already know — your WARM MARKET.

Warm Market Prospecting — It Doesn’t Have to Be Icky

The thought of talking to family, friends and colleagues — people you already know — makes most people very uncomfortable.

But what if I told you…

You can approach your warm market without feeling weird or self conscious.

It’s a matter of “Who do you know” rather than “Buy my stuff” or “join my team“.

When you ask for referrals rather than purchases, you position yourself as a solution provider rather than a salesperson.

You also trigger their “snoopy gene”…

Many time, the people you talk to in your Warm Market, the ones you ask for referrals will check out what you’re doing out of curiosity.

And you’ve done what you set out to do… you got people to TAKE A LOOK.

Finally…

These 3 factors… finding a mentor who tells it like it is — joining a team that supports each other — and prospecting our Warm Market in a different way have made the difference between failing in yet another MLM…

and FINALLY realizing success in Network Marketing.

So what about the company leadership, the product, the training and the comp plan?

Aren’t they important?

Of course they are, but we’ve always done our research before joining a company, yet still we failed.

This time we’ve found success, we’ve found a home…

and you can, too.

Can You Handle the Truth? Keep Your Day J-O-B!

Rant time folks. Don’t read if you’re not up for hearing the TRUTH.

I’m pissed this morning. Yes, I cursed. I’m a mom and never curse in front of the kids but we’re all adults here.

I want you to LISTEN UP. In less than one week a few students of mine who shall remain nameless have told me that they have be “advised” to not seek work or to let go or scale back on jobs they have so they could build their business and have more time to focus.

Both students have familes, kids, mortgages and spouses that depend on them. Both were told that if they just focused on their business full time it would be better. Both are stressed out and are infact more UNFOCUSED because of it. Both have spent oodles of money and borrowed from family, friends or cleared their savings to invest in their business. They love this business and aren’t going to give up, they are just worried and it is taking longer than they thought. Both have made money in their home business so they’ve had a taste of what it can be life and know this IS REAL and VIABLE.

Here’s what I told them: FAMILY COMES FIRST then comes your business. You do what it takes to take care of your family. If you’ve been an entrepreneur LONG enough like I have, you know Businesses can come and go. You get ONE SHOT at your family. I have a golden rule: I will NOT lose my family over my business. Believe me, my spouse has thought I was nuts at times when I spent oodles of money on coaching, training and products. But I’m still here 3 years later and doing fine. I live a life I am comfortable with. This is not my FIRST ride on the merry go round.

I’ve had a real estate company, a restaurant, and years of consulting practices. I’ve lost my shirt in some and had great success in others. (We will never own another restaurant!) Business is an EBB and FLOW. I could lose everything tomorrow and it wouldn’t matter. I’d still have my family and we’d start over. We’ve done it before.

THE TRUTH BE TOLD: There is NOTHING WRONG with working a PT job or a FT job and building your business on the side. There is EVERYTHING RIGHT with having a sense of peace over marketing dollars spent when you know you are not taking food out of your kids mouths. NEVER BET THE MORTGAGE. Most of the time you’ll lose.

DON’T LISTEN TO THOSE PEOPLE WHO TELL YOU TO QUIT YOUR JOB, INVEST YOUR LIFE SAVINGS AND THE MONEY WILL COME.

THERE’S A REASON MOST NEW BUSINESSES FAIL WITHIN THE FIRST 5 YEARS AND HOME BUSINESSES WITHIN 1 YEAR. IT TAKES STAMINA AND THERE IS NO MAGIC BULLET.

IT’S WORK PEOPLE. AND IT CAN BE FUN!!!

Don’t get me wrong, you DO need to take RISKS in your business. CALCULATED RISK is good.

Let’s face it, everyone online is her to make a good living and life the lifestyle we want. Most of us are here to sell products and services that HELP people. Some are just in it for a BUCK. Those people will be gone in short order. I’m in it for a BUSINESS and for the long term of leaving a LEGACY. 5 years from now, I will still be here helping people, just like I was 5 years ago.

I’ve learned that from my mentors and I’ve witnessed it. THIS IS A LONG HAUL GAME.

IT IS OK TO MAKE MONEY HELPING PEOPLE. And YOU can make money with your business. It takes time and effort. And some days seriously SUCK, while others are FANTABULOUS.

BE SMART ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS and how you go about your days.

Do NOT quit your job to START your home business. QUIT YOUR JOB WHEN YOUR BUSINESS SURPASSES YOUR DAY JOB INCOME ON A REGULAR BASIS.

See folks….the strong and persistent PERSERVERE. Everyone I have ever talked to who has “MADE IT” — DIDN’T make it over night. It takes TIME. And they worked their A**es off to learn their craft. Most people have two problems: they run out of time and money based on their personal situation.

Let the security of a J-O-B or any other role FUEL YOUR BUSINESS. Use it to your advantage.

Please please, take care of those you love, evaluate your personal situation and most of all. LISTEN TO YOUR GUT. Selling is done to the emotions but your gut always knows.

This post may freak some people out. It needed to be said. ITS THE TRUTH.

And just so you know while I never bet the house, I do bet on BLACK 13.

I BELIEVE you can succeed. I BELIEVE in YOU like my mentors BELIEVE(D) in ME.
